Electronic clothes, renewable bones, printed houses

20th Rapid.Tech 3D showcases the present and future of 3D printing. The 20th anniversary event opens its doors tomorrow. The pioneering additive manufacturing event is back at Erfurt for the 20th time.

(Erfurt, 13 May 2024). Rapid.Tech 3D’s 20th anniversary event opens its doors tomorrow. The pioneering additive manufacturing event is back at Erfurt for the 20th time. From 14 to 16 May 2024, it will showcase more than 100 3D printing developments and applications. The international specialist conference will present the latest advances in 3D printing in over 60 lectures.

The finalists of the 3D Pioneers Challenge will also be presenting their innovations in 3D printing. This international competition for pioneering design and technology is bringing its final to Rapid.Tech 3D for the ninth time. Of the submissions – which came from 25 countries across five continents – 43 entries made the shortlist from which the winners of this year’s 3D Pioneers Challenge will be chosen. The event’s main sponsor is the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society.

The finalists include a futuristic 3D-printed dress by Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht and the US company Chromatic 3D Materials. The dress has integrated LEDs that interact with its surroundings as the wearer moves. Its manufacturer claims it is one of the first garments in the world to embed electronics directly into elastic 3D printed materials.

One pioneering development in the medical field is a customised femoral implant that can regenerate bones that have been destroyed by cancer, created by US designers working with doctors from Israel. A German innovation on show is a scaled-down version of the largest 3D-printed house in Europe, which is located in Heidelberg. WILLOWPRINT also comes from Germany: the start-up develops 3D-printable materials from wood waste and uses them to produce seating.

A total of 96 exhibitors from Germany and beyond will be presenting the latest advances in additive manufacturing (AM), as 3D printing is also known, at this anniversary Rapid.Tech 3D event. At the heart of the three-day event is the specialist conference, which will host presentations by over 60 international AM experts across nine different forums. International companies such as Audi, BASF, BMW, Boeing, Daimler, Rheinmetall, Siemens and Trumpf will be represented, alongside medium-sized companies and research institutes from Thuringia such as 3Faktur, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Burms, Fraunhofer IOF and MiMtechnik.

This year the event is being sponsored for the first time by the VDMA (German mechanical and plant engineering association) Additive Manufacturing Working Group – an ideal choice!
