Innovative 3D printed applications made from recycled bio-based, natural and industrial residues and by-products? Are you wondering if it is possible? The simul+ real laboratory SAMSax will show you how!
Our simul+ Living Lab SAMSax (Sustainable Additive Manufacturing in Saxony) sets new
standards for sustainability and economic efficiency in the Saxon industry.
Our project aims to promote the circular economy in Saxony by integrating locally generated residues from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into industrial production through additive manufacturing processes, commonly known as '3D printing’.
What do we want to achieve?
We aim to upcycle organic and inorganic waste materials and by-products from industry and agriculture to reduce waste, lower CO₂ emissions, and support climate protection through the circular economy. Additionally, we aim to foster collaboration among all stakeholders and drive innovation through digitalisation and knowledge transfer.
Diverse residues
Powder from residual materials
In the SAMSax Living Lab, we have analysed over 30 different residues to date. These include cotton fluff, glass fibers, wood, jeans dust, coffee husks, coffee grounds, miscanthus grass, paper dust, and leather dust, all in powder form.
Residues are analysed for their potential use in additive manufacturing processes. Binder jetting and material extrusion methods are used in this process.
What applications are possible?
The potential applications are wide ranging, from personalised products and sustainable packaging to prototypes and small series. We also see potential in restoration and rapid prototyping models.
Use-Case: Printed stage designs – From scan to theatre application
Karl-Marx Monument from scan to print
The Karl-Marx Monument was successfully created as a prop for a theatre play in Chemnitz. SAMSax facilitated the production process by allowing the prop to be easily made from wood dust using material extrusion. The process involved capturing 3D data with a scanner, converting it into machine code at a 1:50 scale, and printing. The theater artists then creatively processed the printed monument.
The prop can be transformed into a new printable paste by simply dissolving it in water when no longer needed.
How can we benefit you?
- Living Lab for every SME in Saxony
- Networking and collaboration
- Active knowledge transfer through digital technologies
- Free analysis of your residues and/or collaborative development and testing of your
application ideas
- Overview and access to available residues and application possibilities
Our close collaboration with stakeholders from industry, agriculture, universities, and other research institutions, as well as authorities, not only fosters idea generation and provides solutions but also enhances acceptance and practical implementation.
Do you have any residues or are you interested in potential applications? Do you have a
network for potential partnerships and collaborations or would you like to share your
knowledge and expertise with us? We look forward to welcoming you to our SAMSax network soon.
